Northgate Cottage, Totnes, 1980
Northgate Cottage is shown here in November 1980 at the junction of Castle Street and Antrim Terrace. In 1888, it appeared in the Ordnance Survey Town Plan of Totnes (Devonshire CXXI.5.19; surveyed 1887; published 1888). At that time, Antrim Terrace was not built. To the north of the cottage (i.e. to the left of the photograph) lay a nursery; to the south (up Castle Street/Hill) lay Northgate House and Northgate Villa. In the 1891 Census, Northgate Cottage was occupied by William H. Mayne, aged 36, a gardener, born in Kenn; his wife Elizabeth A., aged 32, born in Exeter; their daughter Rose, aged 7, born in Torquay; a domestic servant, Bertha Watts, aged 28, born in Heavitree. In November 2024, the cottage was advertised for sale by auction by Rendells, the estate agents. The guide price of £270,000 reflected its dilapidated condition by that date.
