The Plains

Harrisons Garage, an independent garage, established in Totnes 1913, when Charles Harrison came to Totnes from his apprenticeship with Wolsley Motors where he had worked with Herbert Austin. He rented the stable mews of the Seven Stars Hotel and in those days there were few cars and little money. In 1914 Charles Niles returned from the tin mines of Nigeria and joined Harrison to form a partnership. From 1922 they operated their HQ on the Plains and in 1998 moved to purpose built premises on the Industrial Estate. Still owned and operated by the family of the late Charles Niles, one of the founding directors of the Company 90 years ago. The main building, the old Harrisons Garage, dates between 1790 and 1795.
