Taunton Gate

Taunton Monument at St Peters Gate. William Doidge Taunton was mayor of Totnes, Mayor of Totnes 1824, 1830 & 1840, although he did not built it it was opened during his Mayoralty in 1824. The inscription read "this walk is dedicated to the public by the Corporation of Totnes. W.D. Taunton, Mayor." The New Walk had an avenue of chestnut trees from the old cottage on which the Dart Hotel was built. The Town Marsh was fenced off by posts and chains. TT May 1969 mentions "the forgotten folly knocked down by a lorry in 1956."
