River Dart 1901

River Dart showing the ropewalk - this consisted of a parallel pair of wooden pillars at regular intervals, roofed over for its entire length and each pair of pillars was provided with a wide steel pulley for the weaving or "laying" of rope. Bourton Hall and estate in background, left. There appear to be three known ropewalks in Bridgetown. The one seen here just off the Newton Road reportedly out of use by 1916. Another alongside the site of St Johns church see Deane's map of 1913. The third "beyond Fairseat" which is off Steamer Quay.
