East Gate Fire 1990

East Gate Fire 1990 - September 4th 1990 - The East Gate was reduced to bare stones and the adjoining buildings were gutted. The fire started shortly after 1am and raged for three hours. About 100 firemen attended, pumping water from the River Dart to supplement the hydrants. The Fire is thought to have commenced in offices next to the East Gate - cause unknown.
