Samuel Chaffe, of Sweaton and Foxworthy (c.1812–1895)

Samuel Chaffe was baptised at Widecombe on 19 July 1912 and lived with his parents at Sweaton farm. The inscription on his grave in Leusdon churchyard reads: ‘In loving memory of Samuel Chaffe who died at Foxworthy August 8th 1895, aged 84 years. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord”.’ He is recorded in various censuses as farming at Sweaton, which is a short distance from Leusdon church. By 1891, he was recorded as a ‘retired farmer’ at Foxworthy, to the north west of Sweaton. Sweaton is shown in image DRA 6201 and partially in DRA 6157.
