Haytor granite railway, 2021
Photograph taken 6 June 2021, facing north-west towards Merrivale. This railway or tramway was built to carry granite on horse-drawn wagons from Haytor, Dartmoor, to the Stover Canal at Ventiford (see image KBS 0044 and others). The right-hand track leads towards Swelltor Quarries; the left-hand track leads towards and around the back of King’s Tor, shown in the centre of the image. The image clearly shows the granite blocks that formed the tracks. Their outer surfaces were cut away to leave a projecting section that guided the inside of the wagon wheels. Image PBS 0035 shows a replica wagon and its placement against the granite blocks.
