Below Ventiford Basin, Stover Canal, 2021

Ventiford Basin marked the northern terminus of the Stover canal. Local clay was brought overland, loaded onto barges and sailed down the canal to the Jetty Marsh sea lock. In 1820, George Templer brought his granite tramway to this point from the quarries he owned at Haytor. The Dartmoor granite then followed the same route to Teignmouth as the clay. This shows the area below Ventiford Basin in November 2021. We acknowledge the details provided by the Inland Waterways Association and the Stover Canal Trust in writing this.
