Higher Weekaborough, c. 1930
The group is standing in the doorway of Higher Weekaborough Farm, Berry Pomeroy. The men are, from left to right: William Cole, who owned the farm, Fred Harris, Harry Barter. The two women with hats are Lois Marshall (left) and Nancy Marshall; in the centre is Louie [sic] Barter (born Ebbs), from St Alban's, the wife of Harry Barter. Evidence tends to suggest that the photograph marks William Cole's handover of the farm to Fred Harris, his tenant, around 1930-31. The Barters were possibly acting as caretakers at the farm at the time the photograph was taken, but were farming themselves at Court Farm, Littlehempston, formerly the farm of Harry Barter's parents. Harry Barter's brother, Joe, had been the previous owner of Higher Weekaborough until late 1930. The photograph was included in an album lent by Robert Harris, farmer, of Higher Weekaborough. He has suggested that this photograph was taken by Marjorie Marshall, who married Fred Harris.
