East Gate

East Gate (remaining the property of the Duke of Somerset) was severely destroyed by fire in 1990, rebuilt 2 years later. Now, in 2023, the room immediately above the arch is used by English in Totnes Ltd. Vestiges of decorations - frieze with royal figure heads, linen-fold panelling still remain. The feature shown is at the foot of a stairwell on the church side of the street. The stairs lead to the Clock Tower. The column is located behind the end wall of the teaching room that in earlier times had been part of the King's Head Inn.
