After the lighting of the beacon at a celebration at The Cider Press, Dartington, in 1988 to mark the 400th anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. The original beacon, one of a series to carry news of the Armada to London, was lit at what is now Yarner Beacon, but the subsequent growth of trees meant that a new site had to be chosen for the anniversary.
