Farm, 1860s

Farm, probably at Stokenham, in the 1860s. The two girls in crinolines and boaters are the sisters Alice and Sarah Teage of Sanders, Stoke Village, Stoke Fleming. They were the daughters of Nicholas Dixon Land Teage, recorded in the 1861 Census as an 'Oporto Merchant'. Their mother was Margaret Roope, born (like her husband) in Dartmouth, but they married in Oporto on 4 September 1828. Both the daughters were born in Oporto (also known as Porto), as was their brother William Roope Teage. Nicholas was born in Dartmouth on 12 December 1796 and died in Devon on 9 August 1867.
