Maypole Dancing 1905

Maypole Dancing - August Bank Holiday 1905/6. Photographed in Stearts Field where the Station Road houses are now. This event took place annually on August Bank Holiday until the fields were bought by the Council and the houses built. There was a cricket pavillion in the first field near the railway station, hence the name 'Cricket Field'. In the back row, centre, William Field (with wife) who was a farmer and road maker in Broadhempston and who trained Maypole Dancers also in Ipplepen, Denbury, Totnes etc.
