Maypole dancing, c.1905

Maypole dancing, August Bank Holiday, 1905/6. This event took place annually on August Bank Holiday until the fields, including Stearts Field here, were bought by the Council and the Station Road houses later built. There was a cricket pavillion in the first field near the railway station, hence the name 'Cricket Field'. In the back row, centre, is William Field (with his second wife) who was a farmer and road maker in Broadhempston and who trained Maypole dancers also in Ipplepen, Denbury, Totnes etc.
