Carew Arms, Glazebrook, pre-1914

Carew Arms with Meet (hunt) outside, pre-1914. (It is recorded on the Devon OS map CXX.9, revised 1904 and published 1906, together with other buildings.) It was owned by the Carew family until 1919 when a lot of property was sold. The pages of the catalogue of the sale are shown in other images, including SAV 0039 which notes the particulars of the Carew Arms itself, other buildings, tenants and legal matters. Note the cart to the right of the building and the bicycle beneath the inn sign on the left. The 'sign in the garden' is explicitly mentioned in the sales particulars in image SAV 0039. The Carew Arms later became The Woodpecker, but it was demolished by February 2009, presumably because the building of the A38 had gradually reduced its trade. An online source shows that, on 8 March 2014, the skeleton of the inn sign was still visible, although the rest of the inn had disappeared. By the mid-2020s, the site was used for industrial units.
