Torcross (Tank) c1984

Rescuing WW2 American tank from the sea off Torcross c1984. These negatives, photos & glass plates donated by Mr.H.Bryan Ashby who ran a photographic shop in Fosse Street Dartmouth from c1962-1975 and brought in by his friends Mr & Mrs Waterhouse. Slapton Sands was evacuated in 1943 allowing American troops to practise for D-Day landings in 1944. They were exercising with a convoy of landing ships 27 April 1944 when four German E-boats on routine patrol fired on the ships. Three LSTs were sunk and numerous lives lost on others.
