Jervoise-Smith family and Claude Tritton hunting, 1904

An article titled ‘West Country Sportswomen’ in ‘The Gentlewoman’, 23 January 1909, five years after this photograph was taken, reported as follows: ‘No article on sport in this district would be complete without mention of Mrs. Jervoise-Smith, her daughter, Miss Jervoise-Smith, and Miss Claude Tritton, who live at Sandwell, near Totnes, and are amongst the most regular followers of the Dartmoor Hounds. They are always well mounted, and Mr. Gay has been successful in getting good portraits of three favourite hunters. Mrs. Jervoise-Smith is on “Andy London,” a bay mare 15.2½, which she bought in 1907 from a farmer who knew nothing whatever about the mare except that she came from some place near London – hence the somewhat quaint name. Miss Jervoise-Smith’s Irish horse “Sweetbriar,” 15.3, is well known in the hunting field, and ran third in the Dartmoor Point to Point for ladies’ hunters in 1906. He has been regularly hunted since 1903 by his present owner. Miss Tritton is on a bay mare “September,” fifteen hands, which was bred by Captain Harris at Islington’ [sic]. *** DRA 5765 R 089
