Compton Castle c1904
POSTCARD posted 1904. Compton Castle. Home of Sir Humphrey Gilbert (who was born at Greenway) who was drowned when his ship sank on his return voyage to England. He had been granted Sovereigns patent by Queen Elizabeth 1 which licensed him for six years to explore unknown territories and set sail from Plymouth in his flagship the "Delight" with four other ships 11.th June 1583 landing in Newfoundland less than two months later. His direct descendant Geoffrey Gilbert now lives at Compton Castle. DRA 4753 COM 001
