West Ogwell House 1909

West Ogwell House as illustrated in sale brochure 1909. Estate consisted of over 1405 acres and was home of Daniel Robert Scratton who died in 1902. In C14 the manor of Ogwell was held by Reynell family. Original mansion built by Sir Thomas Reynell 1589 although only a portion of the kitchen remains of this. in C17 the estate passed by marriage from the Reynells to Joseph Taylor whose sword and helmet are believed now to hang in transept of St Marys, Denbury. Scratton family bought the estate from a descendant of Capt Taylor, Pierce Taylor, in 1869. Estate was not sold at 1909 auction the highest bid being £25,000. 1751 - Thomas Taylor began to restore W.Ogwell but didnot add this front until 1790. 1869 E shaped front wings added & entrance porch cut off. 18 bedrooms, winding staircase, passenger lift.
