Frank Cobley and Bill Blackmore, Whiteway, c.1900s
Frank Cobley and Bill Blackmore at Whiteway, Chudleigh, around the 1900s. In the 1901 Census, Frank is recorded as single, living with his family at Rowell, aged 25, with his occupation given as 'ordinary agricultural labourer'. By the 1911 Census, he is still living at Rowell, with his parents and brother Lewis (both single), but his occupation is by now given as 'woodman on estate', reflecting this image more closely. The estate would have belonged to Whiteway House, now a Grade 2* listed Georgian house, built in the 1770s by John Parker of Saltram House, Plympton. Whiteway House is shown in image DRA 6429.
