War Memorial 1920

Unveiling war memorial 1920 - a plaque on side of cistern. Tozers Church House Inn, background. Right, post office/telephone sign hangs over the road. a plaque on side of cistern commemorates 11 residents killed or missing in WW1, paid partly from the Denbury Feoffees (Denburys native charity). Known locally as the Denbury Cistern, possibly on the site of the old market cross. Under the concrete cover is a trough from which horses drank and is now used as a seat. September 1920 - Denbury War Memorial unveiled on Saturday afternoon. Consisting of a Marble tablet affixed to the fountain in the Square, the marble having been taken from an Ipplepen quarry. It is inscribed in golden letters. In thankful remembrance of the men of this parish who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-18, followed by their names. The Memorial was dedicated by the Rev. A.Chadwick (Rector) and Mrs Curtis performed the unveiling ceremony. Brigadier General A.J.Kelly C.B., on behalf of the Parish Council offered sympathy to the relatives. DRA 0319 DB 040
