Arthur R.Hunt

Arthur Roope Hunt 1843-1914 of Torquay and Foxworthy, Manaton. Born in Portugal where his father, Arthur, was a wine exporter. Settled in Torquay 1852. Qualified as barrister but never practised. Settled at Southwood, Torquay, 1874, and in 1884 bought moorland estate Foxworthy. 1870 became FGS, then 1884 F of Linnean Soc. A passionate geologist, he was involved in the exploration of Kents Cavern. Specially studied ripple mark and its origin & submarine geology of English Channel off South Devon Coast. A founder and manager of Torquay Museum. Married Sarah Elizabeth Gumbleton of Co Waterford 1870. DRA 2132 MT 046
