Foxworthy Bridge, 1884
Foxworthy Bridge, 1884. Kathleen Hunt (born c. 1872), elder daughter of Arthur Roope Hunt, with dog Roy. There was a ford just above the site of the bridge which was subject to flooding. The clapper bridge was probably built to alleviate this problem as there was no other fording place for several miles downstream. No record of its age: probably Saxon or early British. Originally a footbridge and unmetalled, it was widened in c.1850 for passage of carts by Robert Nosworthy. In 1887, a clapper broke under the weight of a horse and cart. It was then repaired, metalled and provided with a rough parapet of granite stones. DRA 2125 MT 042
