Arthur Roope Hunt 1843-1914 of Torquay and Foxworthy, Manaton. Born in Portugal where his father, Arthur, was a wine exporter, and settled in Torquay 1852. He qualified as barrister but never practised. Settled at Southwood, Torquay, 1874, and in 1884 bought moorland estate Foxworthy. In 1870 he became FGS, then 1884 F of Linnean Soc. A passionate geologist he was involved in the exploration of Kents Cavern. Specially studied ripple mark and its origin & submarine geology of English Channel off South Devon Coast. A founder and manager of Torquay Museum. Married Sarah Elizabeth Gumbleton of Co Waterford 1870. DRA 2029 MT 008
