South Sands
South Sands, Salcombe. Lifeboat, centre, on edge of beach. Stone building with thatched roof, right. Salcombe lifeboat station was established in 1869 following the wreck of the clipper Gossamer of Liverpool in December the previous year with the loss of 13 lives. The Earl of Devon presented the site for the boat house at South Sands and the High Sherriff of Devon, Richard Durant Esq, provided the funds for the lifeboat and the new building. DRA 1975 SC 005
