War Memorial 1921

War Memorial construction. See THUR 075.076 Thurlestone War Memorial construction in memory of 12 local men who gave their lives in WW1. The cross was modelled on the old village cross at South Zeal. There was a large gathering at Thurlestone on Sunday afternoon at the unveiling of a cross to the memory of 12 men who made the surpreme sacrifice in the war. From this small parish of 418 inhabitants, 98 were on active service during the war and 12 lost their lives. The memorial is a cross resting on four base steps and is a copy of the cross standing in the centre of the village at South Zeal, being constructed from a design prepared by the rector, Rev. F.E.Coope. The memorial stands 16 feet high and has an imposing appearance on the village green opposite the church and overlooking Bigbury. Previous to the unveiling a short service was held in the church, the building being crowded and a large number unable to gain admission. General Alexamder, V.C., Horsewell, South Milton, unveiled the memorial and the Rev. F.E.Coope and Rev. S.R.Hicks (Weselyan) offered prayers of dedication. “Last Post� was sounded and afterwards a large number of wreaths and floral offerings were laid at the foot of the cross. The inscription on the memorial as follows: In grateful memory of the men of this parish who gace their lives during the Great War 1914-1918.
