Shaldon Bridge c1910
Old wooden Shaldon bridge c1910. The first bridge opened in 1827 and was claimed to be the longest wooden span in England and the second longest in Europe. Wood was not a good material to choose and in 1838 one of the arches collapsed and the bridge was found to be riddled with shipworm. In 1840 it was rebuilt. Todays bridge was constructed in 1931 and strengthened in 2002.. Traffic was charged to cross the bridge at Teignmouth end where there was a tollgate and this was scrapped in 1948. DRA 1490 SH 001
