Fowlelscombe Manor 1903

Fowlescombe Manor 1903, Ugborough. Burnt out 1860 - hence ruined appearance. Fowlescombe Manor, built by Thomas Fowell in 1537 and believed to be on the site of an earlier house dating back as far as 1453. Sir Thomas Fowell, a member of the Kings Court, is recorded as being born in Fowlescombe in 1453 implying that there had been a manor house on the site prior to that date. The Estate, known as Fowlescombe (or Vowlescombe) and its last owners in mid C19 were the King family. It has since become an ivy-clad ruin. DRA 1418 UG 001
