Cole family, c. 1901

Nicholas John Cole and his wife Mary Jane (born Stabb) are shown with their children: Sidney George, Elsie and William John. They were both living in Bridgetown at the time of their marriage which took place at Berry Pomeroy on 22 July 1893. In the 1901 Census, the family was living at Mill Lane, Totnes (just before it joined Fore Street; the next Census entry is for 1 Fore Street). In that Census, the children's ages are given as 6, 5 and 2, and their parents' as 34 and 29 respectively, so placing this image around 1901-1902. Nicholas's occupation both at the time of marriage and at the 1901 Census is recorded as 'mason'. He was the brother of Mrs John Arnt's grandmother (from USA, visitors to Totnes in 1978). Elsie later married Percy James Marsh. DRA 1038 TOT 015
