George Chapple, road-maker
The road-maker cracking stones at the side of the road is George Chapple of Denbury, wearing a protective face mask made of mesh. The stones are being broken down to nut size, spread over the road and then will be pressed in by the steam roller. George Chapple (1822 – 1908) was an ex-seaman and previously landlord of the Union Inn, Denbury. DRA 0836 IVY 001
