Fortescue household staff

Shown here are the staff of the Fortescue household at The Grange, Ipplepen. In the 1891 census, possibly around the time of this photograph, the household of The Grange consisted of Matthew Fortescue, JP, 'living on own means', born in Blackheath, London; his wife Emily J[ane], born in Diptford; Mary W. Chudley, a cook; Rhoda T. Finch, a parlour-maid; Phillipa D. Finch, a housemaid; William G Harris, a groom. The gardener (not noted in the census) was Mr Harris, so possibly the same person as the groom. In the 1901 census, Matthew and Emily Fortescue are still recorded at The Grange but now with only two servants, Margaret Rowe and Rachel Lobb, both from Cornwall, so this image appears to date from earlier than 1901.
