War Memorial 1920
Ipplepen War memorial. Colonel F.C.Fulton unveiled the memorial and restoration of the ancient village cross on Sunday 4th November 1920. Rev R.D.Cooke performed the dedication. The remains of the cross stood in the centre of the village on the site of the ancient market granted to the town by Royal license in 1318. The restored cross of Dartmoor granite from Swell Tor at 11ft now stands on an octagonal base of three steps. Restoration plans were by Mr Herbert Read of Exeter and £90 was raised by public subscription. The inscription at the base of the cross reads " This ancient cross was restored to the proud memory of the Ipplepen men who fell in the Great War 1914 - 1919". Colonel Fulton in his address urged the parishioners not to let the cross suffer from neglect or to become a mere signpost in the village. A tablet with names of the fallen 23 men was also placed in the Parish Church. A record of service was prepared by the vicar and written in plain Gothic by Mrs Webb of Church Cottage listing particulars of service and distinctions won by the 181 men who served from the parish. This was framed and hung in the council school. DRA 0140 IP 051
