Burke/Wills Expedition - William John Wills died in 1861 whilst exploring the Australian outback with Burke (A photograph of drawing in the Guildhall) Miss A. Mackinnon, of Torquay, presented a charcoal drawing by the artist Longstaff from a famous picture in the Melbourne Gallery, Australia, to the Mayor of Totnes (Mr G. Perrow in 1958). The picture is of William John Wills and Robert O'Hara Burke, famous explorers, on their return to Cooper's Creek after their gallant attempt to cross the Australian continent from south to north.
