Mayflower 1957

MAYFLOWER ll, 1957 A full scale replica built at Upham Shipyard in Brixham of the original “Mayflower”that set sail for New England with Pilgrims in 1620. Financed by private donations from England and USA the “Mayflower ll” sailed from Brixham across the Atlantic Ocean to Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA in 1957. £75,000 reproduction ship; the hull built of Devonshire grown timber. Thousands watched the launch whist the band of the Somerset Light Infantry played the traditional American song ‘John Brown’s Body’. Four months saw her superstructure fitted, mast and spars stepped, standing rigging set up and the running rigging rove off prior to her leaving Plymouth on her voyage to America on 2nd April 1957.
