Resewerage Scheme 1979-80
Sept 1979 - Fore Street closed for resewerage scheme. Temporary gas and water mains were laid and pavements kept free for shoppers. Light deliveries to shops and businesses were possible. Work went on in a 10ft by 10ft deep trench and moved up the street by 5yds a day depending on problems encountered. Fore Street was closed to traffic for the rest of the year as part of South West Water Authority resewerage scheme. Southern Counties Construction, Devon County Council, South West Gas, South West Electricity and SWWA were working closely together on this project which was seen as an opportunity to do those various works which should prevent the road having to be dug up for some years to come. Work on the scheme was split over three years. £5.9 million scheme to give Totnes one of the most modern sewerage schemes on the country. Work recommenced in the High Street in January 1980.
