Hallsands c1910 In the 1850s and 1860s there were around 37 houses here with a population of 128. On January 26th 1917 the fishing village of Hallsands was washed away by the sea during an easterly gale. Between 1897 and 1902 the Hallsands coast had been dredged extensively for shingle. At this time the Royal Navy was planning to extend Devonport dockyard and needed shingle to make the concrete.
