Compton Castle, Paignton F.FRITH POSTCARD 25935 DP 13 Compton Castle - not actually a castle but a fortified Manor House, home to the Gilbert family for 600 years - now National Trust. Home of Sir Humphrey Gilbert (who was born at Greenway) who was drowned when his ship sank on his return voyage to England. He had been granted Sovereigns patent by Queen Elizabeth l which licensed him for six years to explore unknown territories and set sail from Plymouth in his flagship the "Delight" with four other ships 11.06.1583 landing in Newfoundland less than two months later.
