Redworth House 1949
Redworth House - Ashburton Road, 1949 (now Kennicott). Was the HQ for Land Army girls during WW2. Sent via e-mail by Taffy Morgan (ex land girl) Redworth House built on the Redworth Estate (23 acres) around 1866 for Mr Thomas Bryett. January 1897 sees Redworth House newly fitted with 120 incandescent electric lights - will shortly be occupied by Mr `A.M.Singer. He gave the men engaged at the house a supper at the Castle Hotel. He arrived to take up residence in February 1897. Having also purchased Bowden House, Mr W.Singer will reside at Redworth House and Mr A.M.Singer at Bowden House. It is reported that Mr Singer of Bowden House intends making a racecourse for steeplechasing. REDWORTH HOUSE (Western Times 12.04.1864) Laying the Foundation Stone of Mr Bryetts new mansion Theodore Bryett Esq having recently purchased some property near the Old Barrack Road and Ashburton Road, the foundation stone of the mansion was on Thursday laid by Mrs Bryett amidst great rejoicing and festivity. A large number of Mr & Mrs Bryetts friends were invited to be present and at least three hundred of the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood (including the Mayor and Mayoress) attended. Just after two o'clock the stone was laid by Mrs Bryett, there having been previously placed under it a bottle containing a piece of vellum on which were inscribed the names of the owners, Theodore Bryett Esq and Mrs Bryett; also Mr Sheldon Bryett, Miss Bryett, Colonel Willoughby, Mr Turner of Dawlish and other friends: with the architects name, Mr John Heath Jnr, Mr Edward Woodley, builder: the date etc etc: also several coins of the present year. The whole company with the workmen were beautifully supplied with refreshments, comprising choice wines, ale, cakes, buns etc. The Totnes bells rang merry peals throughout the afternoon in honour of the event and there were all kinds of amusements going on on the ground. The house is to be called "Redworth House" the property is delightfully situated, commanding fine view of the town and neighbourhood.
