The Screech family at Coldharbour, Bridgetown,1940s

The 1939 Register England and Wales records the Screech household living at 4 Coldharbour: John George [Jack] Screech, his wife Lilian E., and a child, almost certainly Tryphena (although that entry in the Register is ‘officially closed’ at present (2025), as are entries for the other children at Coldharbour in 1939). In 1949, the Coldharbour cottages and most of the other properties in Bridgetown were put up for auction ‘on instructions from His Grace the Duke of Somerset’, although 4 Coldharbour, ‘being let with part of the Berry Pomeroy Estate is withdrawn from the Sale’. No other information is given in the catalogue, but it might suggest that the Screech family was able to buy No. 4 before the auction began but after the catalogue was printed.
