German field gun, North Gate, Totnes, 1920s

This photograph, from the 1920s, was taken by the North Gate where this German field gun was placed after WW1. The Totnes Times, 15 November 1919, reported: 'Lt. Col. F.K. Windeatt as senior officer of the 5th (Prince of Wales) Battalion Devonshire Regiment asked the Mayor to accept on behalf of the Borough, the gift of a captured German field gun, taken by the 1st – 5th Devons during the last great advance. He thought it appropriate that one of the guns captured should find a resting place in the Borough and suggested a tablet should be placed on the gun so that people should not pass it in ignorance of the circumstances under which it found a place in Totnes. The Mayor, Ald. B.W. Hayman, accepted the gun on behalf of the Borough.' From Mrs Iles.
