Samuel Reed at 84 High St

Samuel Reed, watchmaker & jeweller, at 84 High Street (Early C16. Refronted early c19). The shop can also be identified in image RD 0444. Samuel Reed walked to Dartington Hall every Thursday morning to attend to all the office clocks, then walked back again. His father Robert Reed was also a watchmaker (Kelly's Directory, 1890); an image of Robert Reed with his wife is shown at VAR04 015. The photograph was donated by Mrs Lydia Green (born Reed), the daughter of Samuel Reed and his wife Mary Jane (Fox).
