St.Peters Quay 1988
Taunton Monument remains, 1988, St Peters Quay TT July 1992 - It was recently discovered that one of the two large granite balls, all that remain of the Totnes Castle and Keys or Tauton Monument, was in the River Dart near the Steam Packet Inn at St Peters Quay. The monument, a folly-like representation of the towns coat of arms, was built at the end of New Walk in 1835, during the mayoralty of William Doidge Taunton to commemorate the opening of a bowling green and tree-lined pleasure ground. When Town Marsh Quay was bought by Westward Developments Ltd, concern was expressed by members of the public over the future of the balls, and it was agreed by the then Totnes councillors that they should be taken into safe keeping until the area was developed. However nothing was done. Bob Mann with Steam Packet landlord are to rescue it and it will be taken to the Guildhall together with its companion. *** BW/138/016
