Compton Castle

Compton Castle.  Ditto in Totnes and River Dart Album etc by TT and Western Guardian office. Home of Sir Humphrey Gilbert (born at Greenway) who was drowned when his ship sank on his return voyage to England. He had been granted Sovereigns patent by Queen Elizabeth 1 which licensed him for six years to explore unknown territories and set sail from Plymouth in his flagship the Delight with four other ships 11.06.1583 landing in Newfoundland less than two months later. His direct descendant Geoffrey Gilbert now lives at Compton Castle. REF: TOTEH 88 117 B2
