Royal Navy

Lieutenant Gerald Harris Sherriff, B.E.M., - Royal Navy. Born 1896 at 17 High Street. Apprenticed in bakery trade to Mr Alfred Tarring. Joined RN as youth in Cookery Dept serving in both World Wars. 1914-18 was in action in HMS Colossus in the Battle of Jutland. WW2 - on convoy duty in Atlantic to Russia & Iceland. Took part in "D: Day landing in France. Awarded B.E.M. in 1944 for meritorious service on West Coast of Africa. Retired from RN 1947. Employed by West of England Bacon Co as Foreman of the Small Goods Dept.
