Bus Garage 1930s

The Western National Omnibus Co garage in Ticklemore Street, 1930s - opened 1935. Previously where R.Blight kept some of his horses and motor lorries. Prior to this was used as a garage by Mr Hendra who had the "Totnesia" cars who sold out to Mumford's which became "Southern General' and taken by Western National. Western National bus depot at Warland closed end of May 1981 - caused by the company's economy measures with a loss of 27 jobs in the town - depot traffic supt, depot mechanical supt, an inspector, 17 drivers, 3 fitters and 4 cleaners. Bus services operated from Totnes continued using staff from depots at Torquay and Dartmouth. The enquiry office on the Plains remained open - manned by one clerk. Now residential housing.
