Ropewalk and River Dart, 1906

54340 VALENTINES POSTCARD, produced 1906. Looking upstream from Totnes Bridge, you can see, left, the railway line used for moving timber from Reeves, the timber merchants. On the right are part of the old racecourse across the Dart and the ropewalk. This consisted of parallel pairs of wooden pillars at regular intervals, roofed over for its entire length. Each pair of pillars was provided with a wide steel pulley for the weaving or 'laying' of rope.
