Elizabethans c1970s
Elizabethan stall in the Civic Square. Mrs M.Emmett and Mrs Westcott, right. DP8 On Tuesdays from June to September, Totnes steps back 400 years to the first Elizabethan age. Launched in 1970 and the brain child of Claude Taylor it consisted of a Charity Market, guided walk from the Island in the afternoon and folk dancing in the evening at the Seymour Hotel. Shopkeepers and townspeople could be seen in the street and serving in the shops and cafes. Many of our existing buildings are of Elizabethan structure such as the Guildhall and Museum. Both historically and architecturally Totnes has a strong link with Elizabethan days. Still continuing today on Tuesdays in Totnes with a Charity Market in the Civic Square.
