Jill Bennett at H. Green, chemist, 21 High Street

This location played an interesting role during the Second World War. H. Green, the owner, used to recount that, during the run-up to D-Day, Americans based in the area and in transit to the local ports had time to kill in the town. Numerous GIs left their kitbags and equipment in his chemist's shop. On returning to collect them, many left tins of pineapple, peaches and large packets of American cigarettes to say thank you.
