Council Housing at Pathfields, Bridgetown, 1946. Tuesday 21.05.1946 at 7pm. As Lilley Ramsden, the Mayor, approached, the Borough engineer stopped the proceedings saying that a non-union member should not be laying the first brick and would she agree to become a member of the British Bricklayers Union. Lil replied she was a Trade Union Member but if she was to be a bricklayer she would join with pleasure. Borough Engineer then produceed a scroll, suspended from this was a large disc bearing the letter "L" for learner. After repeating the oath, and amid much laughter, the Mayor proceeded expertly to lay the first brick.
