Waterman's Arms 2005
Watermans Arms - Victoria Street, 2005. The Watermans Arms was originally opened in 1608 with a free lease of 3000 years. Until 1921 the Watermans belonged to the Lion Brewery which operated in South Street. In that year all the pubs the brewery owned were sold. The Watermans was withdrawn from auction when bids reached £1250. It was subsequently bought privately by Mrs E.J.Phillips who was the tenant at the time. Mrs Phillips was the wife of Mr."Nobbler" Phillips who died some years before. She had paid an annual rent of £12. It was later taken over by Mr Stanley Roose, grandson of Mr & Mrs Phillips. Stanley Roose ran it until he died. (S.W.Roose was there in 1968). In the 1970s the tenants were Mr & Mrs Leyman. As remembered by Jack Matters in the 1970s.
