Slapton Sands

Anniversary of the loss of 749 American soldiers at Slapton Sands on 28th April 1944. A pack of German E-boats came from Cherbourg and attacked them as they practised for the D-Day landings (the exercise codenamed Tiger), leaving about 700 men dead. Torcross guesthouse owner Ken Small was responsible for rescuing an American Sherman Tank which he turned into a permanent memorial to all those who died in Exercise Tiger. Plympton British Legion Standard Bearer and Kathleen Hill stood by the tank.
